Google API vs MCP: why the ZeusSEO connector skips the application wait

· Published · Última actualización

Google API vs MCP comes down to one thing: time to access. The official Google APIs make you apply, justify your use case, pass verification, and manage quotas, and approval can be delayed or declined. ZeusSEO is already a verified Google app, so connecting its MCP gives your AI the Google data ZeusSEO is authorized for right away.

If you have ever tried to wire Google Business Profile, Search Console, or GA4 data into your own tool, you know the wall. The data is free. The access is not. Weeks can pass between the day you decide you want it and the day Google approves your project.

What is the difference between a Google API and an MCP

A Google API is the direct pipe to Google data, but it is gated: you build an app, apply for access, pass OAuth verification, and manage quotas yourself. An MCP connector is a link you paste into an AI assistant that hands it a set of abilities. The ZeusSEO MCP hands your assistant the Google data ZeusSEO is already authorized to read, so you get the access without building or verifying an integration of your own.

Key takeaways
  • The official Google APIs require an application, a justified use case, OAuth verification, and ongoing quota management.
  • Access to a Google API can be delayed or declined, which can cost you weeks.
  • ZeusSEO is already a Google-verified app, so its MCP connector gives your AI Google data with no application on your side.
  • You connect once with one link and inherit ZeusSEO's authorized, compliant access.
  • This is not a workaround. ZeusSEO operates within Google's API Terms and Limited Use policy, and the data is scoped to what its authorized access already covers.

Why applying for the Google API is the slow path

The direct route to Google data is the official APIs: the Google Business Profile API, the Search Console API, and the Google Analytics Data API. Each is capable, and each puts the same gate in front of you.

You apply, then you wait

You create a Google Cloud project, enable the API, and build an OAuth consent screen. For sensitive scopes you submit the app for verification and justify why you need the access. Google reviews it, and the answer can be a delay of weeks or a decline. Nothing about your SEO work moves while you wait on that review.

Google's own documentation sets these gates. Apps that use sensitive or restricted scopes must pass OAuth app verification, and restricted-scope apps can additionally require an independent third-party security assessment (Google API OAuth app verification documentation). The Business Profile APIs add a step of their own: an access request you must submit and have approved before your project can call them (Google Business Profile API documentation).

You own the quotas forever

Approval is not the finish line. Once you are in, you manage rate limits, back off when you hit them, refresh tokens, and handle the day a scope changes. That maintenance never ends, and it is time not spent on clients.

The hidden cost

The real price is not the code. It is the calendar. A client wants insight this week, and the API path answers in a month.

How the ZeusSEO MCP is different

ZeusSEO is a Google-verified app that has already passed the verification you would otherwise be waiting on. The Google connections are in place and maintained.

One connection, already verified

You paste one link into Claude and approve it. From that point your assistant can reach the Google data ZeusSEO is authorized for, through ZeusSEO. There is no project to create, no consent screen to submit, and no quota for you to babysit.

What that means for your timeline

The application wait goes to zero. You go from deciding you want the data to using it in the time it takes to paste a URL and pick a Google account.

Connect it in 3 steps

Go to Claude

This link opens Claude's "Add custom connector" dialog directly:

Go to Claude

Prefer to navigate by hand? In Claude: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.

Paste the link, click Add, then Sign In / Register

Name it anything, ZeusSEO works, and paste this server URL. It is the only address you ever need, for everything ZeusSEO can do:

https://app.zeuseo.com/api/mcp

If you expand Advanced settings you will see OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret fields, leave both empty. ZeusSEO does not use one; the connection registers itself the moment you click Add.

The moment you click Add, Claude sends you straight to Google's own account picker, with no ZeusSEO screen in between. This is where you Sign In or Register: choose the Google account you want to work with, and if it is an account you have not used with ZeusSEO before, this same step registers it. You can stay signed into Claude with one email and pick a different Google account here; they do not need to match.

Turn on every permission

When Claude lists the tools this connector offers, switch all of them on, not only some, so your assistant can use every ZeusSEO ability the moment it lands.

Open your ZeusSEO connector

Confirm it worked. Start a new chat and ask:

Which clients and Google Business Profile listings do I have in ZeusSEO?

If it comes back with your real client names, you are connected. If it cannot see them, open Troubleshooting below.

What an MCP is

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for a tool like ZeusSEO to hand a set of specific abilities to an AI assistant like Claude. You paste one web address into your assistant once, approve the connection, and from then on your assistant can do ZeusSEO work when you ask. It is an open standard that Anthropic introduced in November 2024 (Model Context Protocol documentation, modelcontextprotocol.io).

That one address, https://app.zeuseo.com/api/mcp, is the whole connection. Anything ZeusSEO opens up to your assistant later arrives at the same place, with nothing new to add.

Are we bypassing Google in any way

No. This is not a workaround and it is not scraping. ZeusSEO is an authorized, Google-verified app that operates within Google's API Terms and Google's Limited Use policy. When you connect, you are using ZeusSEO's compliant, authorized access to Google data, the same access ZeusSEO uses for its own reports.

The claim on this page is narrow and true: the ZeusSEO MCP removes the application wait on your side, because ZeusSEO already holds authorized access. The data you can reach is scoped to what that authorized access covers, and Google's own rules still apply to all of it.

Which Google APIs does this replace for me

Practically, it removes your need to apply for and maintain the Google Business Profile API today, and it is on track to do the same for the Search Console API and the Google Analytics Data API as those direct reads ship to the connector.

Today the live tools cover Google Business Profile posting plus listing your ZeusSEO reports, scheduled deliveries, and clients. The connector is where the rest arrives, so you add the link once and grow into it.

What it costs

Using the connector is free. It is included on every plan, the free tier, the trial, and every paid plan alike. There is no separate charge to use it and no plan that unlocks it over another.

Reading your Google data is free to you, because your own AI assistant does the thinking. The only actions that spend Staters are the ones that ask ZeusSEO's own AI to do work for you, and those tell you the cost first. Every action is itemized in Credits → History, including the ones that cost zero.

Safety and permissions

How your data and access stay protected

Your Google credentials never reach the AI assistant. Claude talks to ZeusSEO, and ZeusSEO talks to Google. Your Google access token stays on ZeusSEO's servers and is never sent back to the assistant, to Anthropic, or to anyone else.

Write actions ask first. Anything that changes data or spends Staters is flagged so your assistant stops and asks you before it runs. Read-only lookups of your own data may run without a prompt, which is intentional.

How to revoke. Two independent switches. From the assistant: Settings → Connectors and remove ZeusSEO. From ZeusSEO: Settings, the Claude and ChatGPT section, and revoke the key. Revoking in ZeusSEO cuts access immediately.

Set up ChatGPT

ChatGPT support is coming. For now the ZeusSEO connector launches on Claude only. When ChatGPT is ready it will use the same connection and the same URL you already added, with nothing new to set up.

Troubleshooting

"It cannot see my clients."
The connector can only see what ZeusSEO already sees. Log in at app.zeuseo.com and confirm your clients and their Google connection show up there. If ZeusSEO's own Google connection has expired, reconnect it there first. That is a separate connection from the one you made to Claude.

"I expected it to pull raw Search Console or GA4 rows."
Those direct reads are being added to the connector. Today it covers Google Business Profile posting plus listing your reports, deliveries, and clients. Open the report in ZeusSEO for the underlying Search Console and GA4 numbers in the meantime.
